Burnet steps up13 June 2011 Helen Burnet, Hobart’s current Deputy Lord Mayor, has welcomed Rob Valentine’s decision not to contest the next election for Lord Mayor in October. Ald Burnet thanked Rob Valentine for his friendship, cooperation, integrity and energy working for the people of Hobart in his four terms in the top job. “The coming Hobart elections are now even more critical for our city” Ald Burnet said. “I want to see Hobart revitalised with more people choosing the inner city as a place to live and to enjoy. I fully support the focus of the Jan Gehl plan for redeveloping our city. And look forward to considering the responses received through community consultation. We need an integrated transport system and a central transport hub. We need more playgrounds and green spaces. We need more interesting laneways and ground floor frontages. We must support actions to minimise harm from gambling. We must do more to encourage energy efficiency and alternative energy sources”, she said. Ald Burnet has previously announced that she will be nominating for the Lord Mayor position as part of a Greens team with Bill Harvey for Deputy Lord Mayor and Philip Cocker who are up for re-election. Ald Harvey will be running as Deputy Lord Mayor. We are yet to announce the full Green Team, but rest assured, we will be working hard to making local government relevant and real for voters young and old this October.
