Mt Wellington Cable Car

26 Jul 11 Cable Car

The prospect mooted by some aldermen about a cable car to Mt Wellington seems ill-conceived at best, reckless at worst.

Any viable proposal would see road access closed to make maximum profit for the operator. The Springs visitor and interpretation centre proposal would be dead in the water.

Whilst many visitors to Mt Wellington enjoy access to mountain activities such as walks and cycling, and whilst we could improve the way the road is used to reduce environmental impact, cable car access to the the pinnacle only would be detrimental to enjoyment of what's on offer on the lower slopes.

Our city should welcome ideas that are well-considered, that positively add to the experience of both residents and visitors, that do not add to the burden of ratepayers.
I want to lead a Council that looks to support those ideas which do provide positive solutions for Hobart. The current financial difficulties which the State government faces illustrate the need for prudent financial consideration. We must separate pre-election hype and pie-in-the-sky from the needs of our community.
