MEDIA RELEASE: Helen Haines

Independent Member for Clark Helen Burnet has called for sympathy, calm and a lowering of politically charged rhetoric as we come together as a nation to condemn the alleged attack on Independent Federal MP Helen Haines.

"This is a time where we as a nation need to take a breath, think about our actions and our words and lower the temperature - especially in the media, online and within politics.

“We need to think about how politicians act and what they say that could cause harm to others in their community as well as their colleagues in politics.

“My thoughts are with Member for Indi, Helen Haines, as well as her family, friends and community.  I, together with my office, wish her a speedy recovery.

“There is no place for violence in politics. No one should be in danger doing their job.

“Helen Haines is respected by colleagues for representing her community with dignity, passion and integrity.

“We as Tasmanian MPs would do well to remember this on our return to Parliament next week by showing respect for each other, as Helen Haines would do", says Ms Burnet.
