I believe we have a duty as MPs to do what we can to ensure everyone has suitable housing. It was an issue for me when I was in Hobart Council, and it is one of my main concerns since being elected to state parliament. Recently I gained support for a review of the Short Stay Accommodation Act that the government has been asked to implement, recognising short stay is eating into the rental property market.
The reality is there aren’t enough housing options available, that too many are homeless, doing it tough paying high rents, or being frustrated or forced out competing in what is a commodity market.
There are some good examples out there too. So we wanted to make a series highlighting housing from different perspectives across Tasmania.
