Constituent Question: Racism towards Local Government candidates

Ms BURNET question to MINISTER for COMMUNITY and MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS, Mr JAENSCH

The question is from Yabbo Thompson in West Hobart. In recent times, the greater Hobart councils have united to stand as one to campaign against racism in the We Stand Together campaign. One action was messages and pictures on buses of people standing up for diversity. These councils felt the need for this campaign as racism appears to be on the rise again. We hear that some candidates standing for the local government elections in southern Tasmania are receiving horrible racial abuse. This sends a terrible message across the whole state to all of us. Yabbo's question is: How is the government justifying these cuts to government services, knowing that it is important to have good public services, as these cuts are leading to much more instability?
