Question Time - Housing Affordability - Planning Directive No. 6

Ms BURNET question to MINISTER for HOUSING and PLANNING, Mr VINCENT

Your government was warned in 2018 that Planning Directive 6 (PD6) could affect housing affordability and availability. The Planning Commission specifically recommended that its impact on the housing market, including rental availability, be monitored and reviewed. Minister, what data has your government actually collected and monitored since then? When was that data reviewed, and what did the review conclude about the impact of PD6 on house prices, rents and housing affordability?

ANSWER

Thank you, honourable Speaker, and I thank you for the question. Certainly some parts of that I'll certainly have to take on notice and get more detail for you on some specifics. We continue to work on planning on a regular basis, looking at ways to improve it, talking with councils, talking to local government and seeing how things are affected. We've got several bills before the House now that will improve the time and speed of things. We're always striking ways or things that need to be reviewed and looked at. We will continue to do that as we need to. We have a very good working relationship with the offices of local government as well as the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT), and as things come to fruition, we are trying to make adjustments with that.

As I said at the start of this, in regard to some of your finer points on Clause 6, I will need to seek a bit more advice on that, let me put it in this Chamber in a short time. I'm happy to go back and get more detailed information that will hopefully satisfy your question.
